Search for missing man resumes

Search doesn't uncover clues to Leggett's whereabouts

Squamish Search and Rescue (SSAR) came out of the woods empty handed last weekend after scouring the forest for a West Vancouver man who went missing more than three months ago.

On Dec. 9, David Leggett's vehicle was found by an off-duty police officer in the Shannon Falls parking lot. The vehicle had been sitting there for up to four days, certified SSAR manager Murray Watt said. The rescue team and Squamish RCMP then launched a search in the Shannon Falls/Stawamus Chief area.

Poor weather forced the hunt to be suspended two weeks later. At the time, it wasn't safe for SSAR members to trek around the top of the Chief, which was covered in a thin layer of ice, Watt said.

Last weekend, members were back out again - this time, unfortunately, on a recovery mission, he said. Rescuers and a team of dogs covered areas at the top of the Chief, behind Papoose and around the Malamute.

"We'd like to find him so the family has closure," Watt said.

That didn't occur, even with the dogs' keen noses, he noted. The file isn't closed, but SSAR members don't know where to look next, Watt said. If anyone exploring the area should find something, they should call 911 immediately, he noted.

Leggett is described as Caucasian, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 150 pounds, with blonde hair and balding. He might have been wearing glasses, West Vancouver Police Department officials wrote in a statement issued Dec. 10.

Anyone with information about Leggett's whereabouts is asked to phone West Vancouver Police at (604) 925-7300.
