Second run of women's GS postponed

Austria's Goergl, France's Berioz lead after first run; Rubens in 22nd

Fog forced the postponement of the second run of the Olympic alpine skiing women's giant slalom on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at Whistler Creekside.

The second run has been rescheduled for Thursday (Feb. 25) at 9:30 a.m.

After the first run took place in the morning, fog descended on the course as the scheduled 1:15 p.m. approached. Race officials three times delayed the start for 30 minutes, then another 15 minutes, before postponing the second run with Austria's Elisabeth Goergl in the lead over France's Taina Barioz by a mere two hundredths of a second. Austria's Kathrin Zettel is in third.

American star Lindsey Vonn, bidding for her third medal of the 2010 Winter Olympics, crashed out of the first run.

Vonn said she injured her hand in the crash, but she got up and skied down to the finish area and waved to the crowd.

Shona Rubens of Canmore, Alta., led a group of four Canadians who made it into the top 30 after the first run. She was in 22nd place. Marie-Michèle Gagnon, of Lac-Etchemin, Que., was in 23rd, Marie-Pier Préfontaine of St-Sauveur, Que., in 27th and Britt Janyk of Whistler in 29th.

Rubens, who finished 12th in the super combined on Feb. 18, described her first run as "solid. I think it will set me up well for the second run."

Of her second run, she said, "I'm going to charge it. I have nothing to lose. I don't have huge expectations."
