Senior Centre is need of funds

New activity centre needs $100,000 to open doors

Fundraising for the new Seniors Activity Centre at Solterra's Eaglewind development has hit a virtual standstill, and the delays are causing frustration.

undraising for the new Seniors Activity Centre at Solterra's Eaglewind development has hit a virtual standstill, and the delays are causing frustration.

"The community has been asking for this for 25 years and we need at least $100,000 to open," said Herbert Vesely, member of the Seniors Centre Advisory Committee.

The 10,000-foot senior's complex is under construction and expected to open this summer. The goal is to raise money for furnishings and much needed equipment.

"We all realize it is an important project for the seniors who made this community," Vesely said, adding every family in Squamish ought to donate $1,000 for the new centre.

Denise Imbeau, fundraising committee spokesperson, said the delay in opening doors may have an upside.

"Part of me thinks it's not that terrible because we have the building and we are going to get in there at some point," Imbeau said. "This gives the seniors time to envision what they want and from there raise money for it."

Vesely said there are certain essentials needed to open the doors of the new facility.

"You can't open it without a coat rack. We are hoping to open a functional centre and I agree the extras can follow," he said.

The goal of the committee is to raise $362,000 to match money the District of Squamish has set aside for the centre. The main features of the facility include a kitchen, multi-purpose room, art room, courtyard, lawn bowling, billiards and tennis courts.

Whether it's the economy or not, Imbeau said fundraising has slowed down. The building is guaranteed but the challenge will be to fill it with meaningful activity.

"We've not made huge strides in the last little while but we have a shell and we could do a lot with the inside," Imbeau said. "Seniors need to envision what they want in there."

Imbeau said being a senior doesn't have to carry a stigma, and the facility can still be a lot of fun.

"I think you appreciate something more when you take the time to acquire it," Imbeau said. "For example, look at the Adventure Centre building. Most people in the community didn't want it, but a swimming pool - that was engaging and we worked hard to raise money for it."

Imbeau said the next step is to galvanize local seniors to find out what they want. She also said it's a real possibility the building will open not completely furnished.

"It's OK because it will give them the opportunity to see what they want and work towards that," Imbeau said.

There are many ways to support the senior centre.
