A woman whom police labeled a "serial offender" was arrested for allegedly having shoplifted $15 worth of potato chips and chocolate bars from a Squamish service station last week her ninth arrest since Jan. 1.
The latest incident occurred last Wednesday (Feb. 2) at 8:50 p.m., when an attendant at the Shell service station on Highway 99 reported the theft of items from the station's convenience store, RCMP Staff Sgt. Guy Pollock said in a statement.
A police search of the area located a female suspect hiding inside a dumpster behind the building.
"The female was well known to police and was a serial offender with 36 police files generated since being released from jail on March 28, 2010," Pollock said. The incidents for which the woman has been arrested since Jan. 1 were "minor offences such as cause disturbance and breach of the peace," he said.
As a result of a previous court appearance, the woman was under court order to keep the peace and be of good behaviour, Pollock said. After the most recent arrest, she appeared for a bail hearing by teleconference before a Justice of the Peace and was transported to court the next day.
Vehicle impounded
Police on Friday (Feb. 4) stopped a blue truck for making an unsafe U-turn at the intersection of Queen's Way and Government Road. The driver told the officer he had no identification, but provided a name and date of birth.
The officer determined that the man was an unlicenced driver and a candidate to have his vehicle impounded and serve a driving prohibition, Pollock said. It was impounded for seven days and towed away. The man was ticketed for making an unsafe U-turn and for driving without a licence.
The police officer later learned that the man had provided a false name and that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Police continue to investigate.
