A 29-year-old Squamish man who is "well-known to police" was arrested after the glass front door of the Shell service station along Highway 99 was broken last week, the third similar incident at the business in recent weeks.
The arrest came after police responded to an alarm at the station last Tuesday, June 19, at 2 a.m., RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement. The front door had been smashed but no entry was gained, he said.
A police service dog was called, and the suspect unsuccessfully tried to flee by bicycle. Upon further investigation, RCMP found that the bike on which the suspect was riding had been reported stolen on May 30. The man is being charged with possession of stolen property and police are examining surveillance video in their investigation "in relation to the male's probable involvement," Pride said.
Police are investigating whether the man might have been responsible for at least two other recent incidents of a similar nature at the Shell station, he said.
Plaques stolen
Police are investigating the recent theft of two bronze plaques from Brennan Park Recreation Centre.
Squamish RCMP were informed of the thefts last Wednesday (June 20). One plaque was stolen from outside the Brennan Park pool on June 18 and the other from the concession stand on June 16. Both plaques commemorated the opening of the centre. Their approximately total value is $1,100.
Man arrested
On Friday (June 22), police responded to a report of an argument between a man and woman at a home in the 38000 block of Westway Avenue in Valleycliffe. At the scene, officers arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a 34-year-old woman who was known to him and living at the same address.
Bike stolen
Last Wednesday (June 20), police received a report of a women's 10-speed Norco Bigfoot mountain bike from the 38000 block of Cleveland Avenue. The bike had been locked to a fence the evening of June 17 and was gone by June 18 at 9 a.m. The owner located the bike on June 20 at around 8 p.m., stashed near the school board office on Second Avenue -about 100 feet away from where it had been left, Pride said. A wheel was missing and the bike was damaged, he said.
