Sewer main work to create traffic detour

District pumps more than $1 million into project

The District of Squamish is set to flush more than $1 million into its sewers.

On Tuesday (June 4), council handed a $1.6 million contract to Coast Valley Contracting Ltd. to replace 943 metres of sewer trunk main in Brackendale. The existing pipeline is at capacity and requires an upgrade, capital projects manager Matt Simmons told council.

Its need for replacement was highlighted in the district's asset management plan. The 2012 Capital Budget included $100,000 for the project's design work, with its implementation slated for this year.

The district anticipates holding a public meeting on the project at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Thursday, June 13. Construction is slated to start on July 8 and anticipated to end by Sept. 15.

It may alter traffic flow, Simmons noted.

"We will roll out a full traffic management plan," he said, noting that may include a detour along Eagle Run Drive, up Meadow Avenue and back to Government Road via Judd Road.

Due to the project's close proximity to Dryden Creek, district officials have retained Cascade Environmental to serve as a certified environmental professional while the work is taking place.
