District of Squamish (DOS) officials plan to "drop, cover and hold on" today (Thursday, Oct. 17), and encourage other local residents to do the same.

The DOS is taking part in the Great British Columbia ShakeOut. Organized by the B.C. Earthquake Alliance Society, the province-wide drill aims to enhance public awareness of the earthquake hazard in B.C. and encourage personal preparedness. At 10:17 a.m., people across B.C. will drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy desk or table and hold on until the "shaking" stops.

"District staff will be 'drop, covering and holding-on' across district facilities and we encourage all citizens to do the same whether at home or work," Mayor Rob Kirkham said. "Through raising awareness of recommended protocols, we can all be better prepared and ultimately save lives when confronted with such a serious event."
