A Squamish resident writes her milestone on the District of Squamish’s 100 celebration banner.

It’s that moment when the training wheels come off your bicycle and you feel the taste of independence and achievement. The second you hear your child’s cry for the first time. Or the day that you unpack your belongings in a space you call your own.

The District of Squamish wants residents to share their milestones as the municipality celebrates 100 years since Squamish got its name. On Friday (June 19), the district unveiled its 100 Years of Squamish: Celebrating Squamish Milestones campaign. The initiative will weave itself throughout community-wide events this summer.

“[The year] 2014 is a historic year for Squamish as we honour our past and recognize the many accomplishments we, as a community, have achieved over the past century,” Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham said in a statement.

Besides Squamish receiving its name, in 1914 legislation was passed by the provincial government that paved the way for the town’s incorporation. Britannia Beach is celebrating its 110th birthday this summer and the Squamish Chamber of Commerce is turning 80 years old. Squamish Savings is blowing out 70 candles on its birthday cake and it’s been 50 years since Brackendale, Mamquam and the Village of Squamish incorporated into the District of Squamish.

“We have so much to celebrate and so much to look forward to as we enter the next 100 years,” Kirkham said.

This summer the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival, which is celebrating its 57th year, will include a Community Picnic on Monday, Aug. 4, hosted by the district in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the municipality’s incorporation. Representatives from the district’s sister city, Shimizu, Japan, will attend.

The district wants you to share your milestones with the community on Facebook.com/Squamish2014 and on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtags #Squamish2014 and #SquamishMilestones.
