A float-away shed seen in the Cattermole Slough last week has been secured and the District is looking into its cleanup.
The shed was seen bobbing along the slough’s shoreline on Thursday.
The wooden structure originated from a collection of buildings further south on the slough and ended up on District property, according to Christina Moore, District communications manager.
Municipal crews were notified of the structure on Thursday and quickly secured the shed to the shoreline to prevent it from moving further.
“Our crews also removed some cans and bottles that might have contained potential contaminants along with some other loose debris,” Moore said in an email to The Chief.
Nothing has spilled from the shed and District crews don’t believe a spill is imminent based on the materials found inside it, she said.
Moore said the District is looking into who is responsible for the cleanup with the various agencies and parties, and will have more details as jurisdiction and a cleanup plan are solidified in the coming days.
“We are also concerned about the source location that the shed came from,” Moore said, adding there is both human safety and environmental concerns that need to be addressed on the property.
Staff has been in contact with the landowner, she said.
