It is official; Squamish's Byrdie Funk is a Canadian citizen once again.
Funk, who spent more than a year fighting to regain her citizenship after she found out it had been stripped from her due to an arcane "age 28" rule, had her citizenship reinstated at a ceremony at Canada Place on Canada Day.
Funk, who was born in Mexico and moved to Canada at two-months old learned in April of 2016 that a little known law required citizens born outside of Canada between Feb. 15, 1977 and April 16, 1981 to reapply for citizenship prior to their 28th birthday.
On June 7, Funk got the call from the chief of staff to federal Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen that her discretionary grant of citizenship had been approved.
Funk, a local counsellor, has said she will continue to fight for other "lost Canadians" and changes to the Canadian Citizenship Act.
