Skunky vehicle leads to arrest

Briefs from the RCMP

May 6 at 8:30 p.m. a member of the Sea to Sky Traffic Services stopped a 2004 blue Ford pick up for a traffic violation. During the process the member detected a strong odour of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The 29-year-old male driver was arrested and an investigation led to the seizure of a large quantity of packaged marijuana, drug paraphernalia and money, and to the seizure of his vehicle. The driver was later released on a promise to appear in provincial court on May 20 to face a charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Road checks nab drunk drivers

May 9 at 7:41 p.m. a member performing a road check at Diamond Road and Tantalus Road observed a 1999 Chevy Silverado pick up and upon checking the driver noticed symptoms of impairment. The 44-year-old driver was subsequently issued a breath demand and supplied two readings, which registered twice the legal limit.

The driver was later released on a promise to appear for court on July 8 where he will face an impaired driving charge.

May 9 at 7:30 p.m. a member flagged a vehicle to stop at road check on Queensway Avenue. The vehicle failed to stop and drove off, the description and plate number was broadcast to other members and the vehicle was stopped by another member on patrol. The 26-year-old driver showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside screening for alcohol. The male was returned to the detachment for breath tests, which showed the male was over four times the legal limit. The male will appear in court on June 17 to answer to a charge of impaired driving.

Get boat safe

Join the Squamish Coast Guard Auxiliary (SCGA) Saturday (May 16) at Squamish Station Mall for Boat Safety Awareness Day. Boat Safety Awareness Day kicks off National Boat Safety Week to promote safe boating practices through education and outreach.

This year's theme is "Wear It" encouraging everyone to always wear a life jacket on the water. SCGA will be in front of Nesters at Squamish Station Mall from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. hosting many interactive activities to create awareness for children and adults.

Activities include having the SCGA fast rescue craft and information trailer on display. For the kids, Bobbie the Safety Boat (a remotely controlled robot) will be there to interact with kids and adults teaching boating, and water safety.

Everyone is encouraged to join in on the many boating competitions planned during the day. The SCGA will be offering PCC safety checks and providing information about the Pleasure Craft Operator Card, which all boaters are required to have by September 2009. The SCGA Awareness Day would not be complete with out having a barbecue and all money raised goes towards SCGA training.

"The SCGA role is promoting boat safety and this is one opportunity to educate and inform the public of the fatal risks involved with unsafe boating practices, and the importance of wearing a life jacket when participating in any water activity," said Ron Drewry, SCGA Unit 04 Leader.

"Boating enthusiasts are encouraged to review boating and water safety manuals annually and hosting Awareness day is a reminder for all boaters to be prepared for the upcoming boating season," said Drewry.
