SLRD asked to consider ban on dumping of organic material

A non-profit group this week asked the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) board to consider banning organic material from landfills and transfer stations as the company looks into setting up a compost facility in Electoral Area C near Pembert

A non-profit group this week asked the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) board to consider banning organic material from landfills and transfer stations as the company looks into setting up a compost facility in Electoral Area C near Pemberton.

Representatives of the group Net Zero Waste said during a presentation at Monday's (March 28) SLRD board meeting that they are working on setting up a composting facility on land owned by the Mount Currie Band (Lil'wat Nation) near the Rutherford Creek power station and asked the SLRD to consider banning the dumping of organic waste into landfills and divert them to the proposed compost facility.

The board resolved to have staff research the implications of such a ban and work with the four member municipalities, including Squamish, to compile a report for the board to consider.
