At the June 26 meeting of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, the board approved $37,000 of funding for the Britannia Beach Volunteer Fire Department.
The funding will come from the Area D amenity funds after the electoral director, Tony Rainbow, made the request to grant the money.
In 2018, the volunteer fire department built a carport structure to house the new pickup truck it acquired for wildfires. In his director's report, Rainbow states the additional funding is required to help the structure meet emergency and earthquake regulations. It will also go toward straightening the egress from the building to allow the vehicle to drive directly onto the road. This adjustment will require moving some ground and adding a culvert in the ditch next to the road.
Last year, the volunteer fire department contributed $31,912.75 for the truck and committed another $20,000 to the carport.
Once the carport is finished, the department's fire chief, David Rittberg, said in a letter to Rainbow that they would have all the housing and storage requirements the department needs for the foreseeable future.
