While there are plenty of rugged recreation spots in the Upper Squamish Valley for adults, the area has been short on amenities specifically for local kids and their families.
That will soon change.
At the SLRD board's July 24 meeting, the community foundation for the Upper Squamish Valley was granted $25,000 from the Area D amenity funds to build a playground. In an outline of the project provided to the SLRD board, the Ashlu Creek Foundation says the playground will include a little free library and message board. The funding will go toward a play structure, two picnic tables and a shelter.
"I think what is happening in the Squamish Valley is it's becoming more of a community," Rainbow said, noting there are more children in the area. Lately, the residents acquired a piece of land and started clearing it for the playground.
"It's an indication that the demographics in that valley are changing and that the total population is changing," he said.
Thirty volunteers are slated to help, and the Ashlu Creek Foundation will provide land, site preparation, potable water system and a new well and water for irrigation.
The foundation hopes to install the play structure, picnic tables, message board and community book swap, as well as the shelter, this summer. Next spring, more features may be added to the play structure.
