Since July 2018, the SLRD has been amending bylaws around agricultural cannabis production, since the drug became legal recreationally in Canada. Several changes were addressed by the SLRD in February, including allowing cannabis production in structures built before July 13, 2018 for growing crops if it has not been altered to increase the size of its base or the base material. Operations must be in an outdoor field, a soil base or a compliant structure.
The bylaw amendment was adopted for Area D. For Area C, the amendment was read for a third time and sent to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for approval before it can be adopted.
Similar bylaws are to be brought forward for Area A and B in the future, but the Official Community Plans for Area C and D are compatible already.
