SMILE: everyone is ready to grin for a Tim Hortons' cookie

Tim Hortons teams up with Burlington Food Bank as its sole benefactor of campaign that's more important than ever

Politician, volunteers and Tim Hortons staff had big smiles on this morning as the popular Smile Cookie campaign got kicked off in Burlington.

Supporters gathered at the Harvester Road/Appleby Line location to share the news that the campaign is underway.

Burlington Food Bank will be the recipient of the week-long drive that annually gives back to charities in the community and executive director Robin Bailey couldn't be more appreciative.

"We are so honoured to be chosen and we are supoer excited this year," he told a crowd of more than 30 supporters. "We have a great relationship with the owners and staff and we are so thankful to be supported."

He added that it's also the people shopping at Tims that make Burlington's campaign so successful. He said last year they raised $145,000 through the campaign. This year's goal is sales of 125,000 cookies, or $175,000.

Burlington MP Karina Gould said the work that Burlington Food Bank does in the community is incredible. "They offer a dignified experience to everyone who walks through the door."

Mayor Marianne Meed Ward added the campaign fills two needs; it's "a sweet tooth with a good cause."

Tim Hortons locations throughout Halton are participating in the annual Smile Cookie charitable campaign that runs until May 5. The cookie campaign started in 1996; since then, they've raised more than $111 million across the country.

From April 29 to May 5, the tasty treats will be available for $1.50 plus tax, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to various local causes that are handpicked by Tim Hortons restaurant owners.

In Halton Hills, those who purchase cookies at the Acton and Hwy. 7/22 Sideroad locations will be supporting Halton Food for Thought, while the three Georgetown locations will be donating to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation.

The local foundation says funds raised will be used for laparoscopy equipment in the surgical department.

Smile Cookie personality pins – Loopy, Bugsy, Starry and Squirmy Smile Cookie – will also be available at participating restaurants.

"Our annual Smile Cookie campaign is a beloved and cherished tradition for Tim Hortons restaurant owners, team members and guests because of the amazing impact we can make together – while enjoying some delicious cookies," said Tim Hortons President Axel Schwan.

"Last year's Smile Cookie campaign raised a record-breaking $19.7 million and I know our guests will be rallying with us again this year to support over 600 charities and community groups and the amazing work they do."
