Smoke Bluffs Park committee members sought

District accepting interested applicants

The District of Squamish is looking to fill seats at the table of the Smoke Bluffs Park Committee.

The municipal body advises council on park issues. It aims to guide the preservation of the green space, while also enhancing the Smoke Bluffs Park's growing popularity with rock climbers.

The 20-hectare green space was recently highlighted in the district's draft Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The 20-year guide for the future development of the community's parks recommended the parcel be dedicated parkland through municipal bylaws. It also calls for the construction of a nature- and climbing-themed play area at Smoke Bluffs Park.

The park contains hundreds of granite rock climbing routes, which are easily accessed by a trail system. The trail loop was complete in summer 2010.

The district allocates $30,000 a year toward the park to cover the cost of covers maintaining three washroom facilities, several bike racks and a few information boards, while the Squamish Access Society maintains the climbing areas.

Committee member applications are being accepted until Friday (Nov. 23) at 4:30 p.m. The ideal candidate lives in Squamish, is passionate about the Smoke Bluffs Park, is familiar with climbing issues and is available to attend meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at municipal hall.

The application form can be picked up at municipal hall, at 37955 Second Ave., or online at www.squamish.ca.
