Snowmobilers dig out a stranded vehicle in the Mamquam River FSR

Squamish SAR crews called out, but called off after sledders found a couple stuck in snow

A team of snowmobilers helped a couple whose vehicle got stuck in the snow overnight.

Squamish Search and Rescue manager B.J. Chute said rescuers were called out to help what was believed to be a pair of overdue snowshoers on Thursday night.

There wasn't enough information at the time to make a deployment, but at first light on Friday, Chute said crews launched out in search of the couple.

However, snowmobilers who happened to be in the Mamquam River FSR area found the couple, who, it turns out, weren't snowshoeing, but whose vehicle had become lodged in the snow.

The snowmobilers were able to help dig the vehicle out, and rescuers were called off the case.

Chute said the pair were well-prepared with food, water and a stove and had the means to stay out a night.

He said this was the only call for Squamish Search and Rescue had this weekend.

There were no responses for avalanches involving people over the last three days — a good sign, considering authorities had issued an alert of high avalanche risk late last week.
