Speed a factor in Hwy. 99 biker death

News

A motorbike rider was killed in a dramatic crash on the Sea to Sky Highway this week - the second such crash in less than a year.

A 23-year-old West Vancouver man lost his life when his northbound motorbike went off the highway at the crest of the hill north of Britannia Beach.

Cpl. Dave Ritchie of the Squamish RCMP reported speed and erratic driving were significant factors in the crash on Monday (April 25). According to Ritchie, the man was traveling on a 2001 red Honda motorcycle.

His bike crashed into the sign that welcomes visitors to the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada. Ritchie said the sign was destroyed in the impact.

Ritchie said the man suffered major injuries and those injuries caused the man's death.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Ritchie said.

The police are certain speed was a factor because many drivers called to report a group of three motorbike riders were speeding and driving erratically.

"The first call came in from Ansell Place," Ritchie said. "We're treating it as an aggressive driving and high speed accident with severe consequences."

Ritchie wants to hear from anyone who with information relating to the crash. He can be reached by calling the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.

Next of kin were notified, Pothier said, but the RCMP did not release the name of the man.

Traffic in the area of the crash was reduced to just a single lane for about two hours.

This latest fatality is the ninth crash-related death on the southern portion of Hwy. 99 in the last 12 months.
