Spreading the words

Qat, qaid, faqir, sheqel, qindar, tranq, qintar, qwerty, qanat, qindarka. You're either thinking "What the heck is this guy writing?" or you're thinking Scrabble.

You're either thinking "What the heck is this guy writing?" or you're thinking Scrabble.

If it's the latter, chances are you know that all of the words listed above - words with a Q but no U - are worth big points on the Scrabble board.

If you are in fact a Scrabble master, now is the chance to bring your vocabulary to the table and put it up against the rest of Squamish's master crossword creators.

"Scrabble for Literacy", a unique fundraising event to spread literacy awareness in the community, is coming to the Squamish Public Library on Saturday, March 27 at 9:30 a.m.

"There are a lot of people who are really excited to be playing in this event so there should be some really challenging games," said event organizer Michelle Lebeau from Capilano College. Anyone who has played Scrabble before is welcome to enter, and there are categories for both singles and teams.

"We're looking for youth entrants and adults - we'll try to accommodate anyone who wants to enter," said Lebeau.

The entry fee is $20 for singles and $30 for a team, which guarantees each player or team three games.

"It's a fundraiser so we hope we can get some help from people who would like to support literacy in our community. It's a good opportunity to meet other people and take challenges from other competitors."

All proceeds from the event will benefit literacy programs at Capilano College and the Squamish Public Library. Individuals and teams can raise funds from pledges and there will also be prizes awarded for top pledges, top individual scores and top team scores.
