Squamish cadets clinched fourth place during the Zone Marksmanship Competition this past weekend.

While the team narrowly missed third place, their team spirit was observed as they left the huddle at the end of the event with their cheer, “We are small but mighty.”

The five-member team from 835 Griffin Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron travelled to North Vancouver to test their skills against various cadets corps and squadrons in the North Shore-Squamish Zone.

The marksmanship team was put together by civilian instructor Garry Stamper, who has taught the cadets the finer points of concentration and breathing.

“Marksmanship is a team sport as well as an individual challenge. It is a great sport to learn and useful for other Olympic sports like biathlon,” says cadet Cpl. Holly Read in a news release. “This is my first time at a competition and it is great learning how it works and meeting other cadets.”

This is the third year the Squamish cadets competed in recent history.

The Top 10 individual cadets and top overall team in each zone competition advance to the provincial competition for an opportunity to take on the national championship. This year, the national championship will also be held in B.C.

The Cadet Program aims to develop in youth ages 12 to 18 the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
