On May 27, Nexii announced that it constructed the restaurant in less than two weeks, creating the first Popeyes location built using the Squamish company’s materials and techniques.
“We are proud to partner with major retailers, like Popeyes, to help them reduce the environmental impacts of their new buildings,” said Gregor Robertson, executive vice president of strategy and partnerships at Nexii in a news release.“At Nexii, we have married sustainability with speed of delivery: not only can our technology reduce climate pollution by approximately 30%, but we can also accelerate construction timelines.”
Popeyes’ general manager in Canada said in the release that the company is working to address climate change.“As a company, we are committed to building the most-loved restaurant brands in the world, and reducing our environmental impact while doing so,” said Robert Manuel.
“We are therefore excited to partner with Nexii to reduce the carbon emissions of an upcoming Canadian restaurant in British Columbia. This is just one of many steps we’re taking as a brand to positively affect climate change, and we’re looking forward to continuing this important sustainability journey with our restaurants.”
Nexii manufactures its building panels in a manner that allows them to be transported and fit together onsite like jigsaw puzzles. Nexii says this decreases build times by 50% to 75%, while also eliminating almost all onsite construction waste.
Its building material, Nexiite, is also branded as more thermally efficient and less carbon-intensive than concrete.
The company says its technology will reduce the building’s carbon emissions by about 30%.As of now, Popeyes has 12 locations in Canada. This location is expected to open by fall 2021.
In December 2020, Nexii constructed a Starbucks drive- thru store. The Starbucks store and the Popeyes restaurant are both located in the same retail development in Abbotsford, British Columbia, and Nexii is in talks to deliver further projects at the site.
