It is a good idea to keep Halloween jack-o-lanterns inside, to help protect our local bears.
According to local wildlife conservation advocates, bears are drawn to pumpkins and therefore jack-o-lanterns outside could lead to increased human-bear conflicts as hungry bears look for food.
WildSafe BC offers the following tips on how to avoid inviting a costume-less bear to your home this Halloween:
1) Bears like pumpkins so bring your pumpkin inside at night and keep it in a cool place.
2) Avoid carving your pumpkin too early as this will accelerate its decomposition and increase its odour.
3) Compost your pumpkin in your tote once Halloween is over.
