Over 20 Squamish Fire Rescue crew members were required to contain a structural fire on May 28 that extensively damaged one home and minorly damaged a neighbouring residence in the Garibaldi Estates.

A spokesperson for the District of Squamish said that Squamish Fire Rescue received a call about the house fire on Chief View Road at 2:14 a.m.

"The incident required all of Squamish Fire rescue’s resources on scene including fire engines, a ladder truck and support trucks consisting of approximately 20 to 25+ Squamish Fire Members on scene," spokesperson Lilly Marie Peterson told The Squamish Chief.

Government Rd. between Leski's Crossing and Garibaldi Way were closed for approximately 11 hours while crew members worked to extinguish the fire. The roads are open now.

"This was a very challenging fire. The adjacent neighbours’ house was threatened but the crew was able to prevent a second structure fire," Peterson said.

"We would like to thank all the members of Squamish Fire Rescue for their diligent work and our thoughts are with those who have lost their homes or been displaced by this event."

Peterson noted that the home had working smoke detectors, which woke up the residents who were able to evacuate their family.

"Please ensure your homes have working smoke detectors as they save lives," she said.
