Squamish man seriously hurt in alleged assault

One arrest made after incident near downtown

A 45-year-old Squamish man was airlifted to Vancouver with serious injuries and another local man is in police custody after what police described as a "very serious assault" near downtown Squamish late Thursday (Sept. 22).

The incident occurred in the 38000 block of Bailey Street, behind Save-On Foods, on Thursday at about 6:20 p.m., RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement emailed to The Chief late Friday (Sept. 23).

Police responded to a report of numerous people yelling in a bush area, possibly the sound of a fight in progress, Pride said. RCMP members arrived to find a man unconscious and seriously injured, he said.

The victim was taken to Squamish General Hospital, then airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital, suffering from what Pride described as "potential life-threatening injuries." A 20-year-old Squamish man was arrested shortly after the victim was found and is in police custody, he said.

Stay tuned to The Chief for further developments.
