A 45-year-old Squamish man was airlifted to Vancouver to be treated for his injuries and another local man is in police custody after what police described as a "very serious assault" near downtown Squamish late Thursday (Sept. 22).
The incident occurred in the 38000 block of Bailey Street, behind Save-On Foods, on Thursday at about 6:20 p.m., RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement emailed to The Chief late Friday (Sept. 23).
Police responded to a report of numerous people yelling in a bush area, possibly the sound of a fight in progress, Pride said. RCMP members arrived to find a man unconscious and seriously injured, he said.
The victim was taken to Squamish General Hospital, then airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital, suffering from what Pride described as "potential life-threatening injuries." The man was "recovering" by Tuesday (Sept. 27), Pride said.
A 20-year-old Squamish man was arrested shortly after the victim was found and is in police custody, he said, adding that the victim and alleged assailant knew each other.
Bikes stolen, fridge raided
A mountain bike was stolen from inside a garage in Garibaldi Highlands on the weekend -the same night that a bear raided a refrigerator inside the same garage. Police speculated that perhaps the bike thief left without closing the garage door, allowing the bear to enter.
The incidents occurred early Sunday (Sept. 25), Pride said. A Specialized Enduro mountain bike was stolen from the garage of a home in the 1000 block of Condor Place sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. There was no sign of forced entry, prompting Pride to speculate that the garage door may have been left "unsecured."
On the same night, a bear entered the garage, targeting a fridge. "The thief may have left the garage door open," Pride said.
A Caucasian male in his 30s, of medium build and wearing a short-sleeved shirt and backpack, was seen in the neighbourhood riding a mountain bike, Pride said. The owner of another home in the area had an unknown person enter their home during the day on Wednesday (Sept. 21), but did not initially report it to police. The owner heard footsteps inside the home and called out, prompting the person to flee. The owner did not get a description of the intruder, Pride said.
In a separate incident on Monday (Sept. 26), a grey-and-black Norco LT mountain bike was stolen from the garage door of a home in the 1000 block of Jay Crescent. The garage door had accidentally been left open, Pride said.
Tools stolen
Also on Monday, numerous power and hand tools were stolen from a garage in the 39000 block of Government Road. A door to the garage had been left unlocked, Pride said. Some of the tools were later found in the bush just down the road from the targeted home.
