She’s taking them up on their offer.

Mayor Patricia Heintzman said at Tuesday’s council meeting that she will be accepting the City of Dawson Creek’s invitation to visit.

Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead sent a letter May 11 to Squamish Council inviting the mayor and councillors to tour that city’s oil and gas facilities.

“The purpose of this visit would be to allow the members of council to see firsthand some of the components of the oil and gas industry,” read the letter from Bumstead.

He said the Peace River Region has many years experience with activities from drilling to processing and pipeline infrastructure.

“This [tour] would give you a firsthand experience to better equip yourself with the information as you face the decisions for your community and area with the planned LNG plant proposed in the Squamish area.”

Heintzman said she would like to go up and not only tour the facilities but to also check out the city’s alternative energy projects.

“I think the city of Dawson Creek has done some really interesting things with regards to energy,” said Heintzman, adding that the city’s recreation centre is powered by renewable energy.

Councillor Ted Prior said he may also take the city up on its offer.

“I think it would be a really good thing,” he said, adding with all the talk about “fracking,” it would be a benefit to see the processes firsthand.

Heintzman said she and any councillors who go on the trip will pay for it out of their own pockets.
