Squamish Nation hereditary Chief Ian Campbell has announced he will be withdrawing from the Vancouver mayoral race.

Multiple media outlets reported his decision, which came as a surprise to many.

It also leaves Vancouver's reigning party, Vision Vancouver, without a mayoral candidate.

Prior to Campbell's nomination, Mayor Gregor Robertson announced he would not be seeking office again.

Campbell’s entry into the Vancouver politics was widely publicized, and in the process he earned the endorsement of some big names.

Just days ago, David Suzuki announced that he would be throwing his support behind Campbell.

Campbell’s campaign raised the prospect of the city electing its first Indigenous mayor.
