Squamish Nation’s top earning councillor took home more than $99,000 for the 2014 fiscal year.
Last month, the Squamish Nation placed council’s remuneration and expenses online. In total, the band’s chiefs and councillors earned just over a million dollars and generated more than $230,000 in expenses across 21 positions – some jointly performed.
The projected 2014 operating budget for Squamish Nation was just under $60 million. The federal transfer to the band for 2013 from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada was $11.25 million.
Councillor Krisandra Jacobs, who is also the communications and band manager services department head, was paid $99,841 for 12 months, the schedule stated. Chief Gibby Jacob, who also serves as the executive operating officer and leads the Intergovernmental Relations and Business sector, took home $95,275. Band manager Glen Newman, an elected position, earned the third largest sum of cash at $72,898.
Newman also accumulated the most expenses, with $27,327 coming out of the nation’s piggy bank. Chief Richard Williams, councillor and Tribal Marine Resources manager, trailed Newman. He generated $20,941 in expenses. Joshua Joseph spent $773 less on expenses than Williams, for a total of $20,168.
Squamish Nation did not return The Squamish Chief’s request for comment by press time.
