Dog killed

The District of Squamish is actively investigating an Aug. 11 incident on Cleveland Ave. between two dogs that resulted in a Pomeranian’s death, according to district staff. Witnesses are being asked to come forward to animal control to help validate the details of the incident. The attacking dog is currently being held by animal control and an extensive formal process will be followed. Witnesses can contact animal control at 604-815-6866.

Trail rerouted

The Oceanfront Lands trail has been rerouted after a fire was set on Squamish developer Doug Day’s property on Aug. 17.

Day told The Squamish Chief that he didn’t know who set fire to his property, located at 1400 Victoria Street, adjacent to Howe Sound Brew Pub.

“We had a pile of bush that we cleared to make room for some trailers that I put down there and a few odds and ends,” Day said. “They used some accelerant and got the fire going and it started to spread north towards the city.”

Squamish Fire Rescue crews, according to District of Squamish staff, put out the fire. Squamish RCMP officers have spoken to the people involved about the matter, according to police. Instead of crossing through Day’s land, public access is now available by heading east of Day’s property towards the Stawamus Chief, and going down the gravel road right-of-way, according to the district.

There is currently a campfire ban in the district. “People don’t realize how serious that could have been,” Day said.
