35 Days of 35
The Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society is celebrating 35 years of service with “35 Days of 35,” a 35-day fundraising and awareness campaign focused on sharing stories from women who have experienced violence and abuse.
The campaign begins on Sept. 3 and ends on Oct. 7.
Daily anecdotes, quotes and stories will be posted on the organization’s Facebook page from clients, volunteers and staff about their experiences with violence, gender inequality and how the Women’s Centre has impacted their lives.

Opinionated about the OCP?
The District of Squamish is looking for four curious and opinionated residents to join its Official Community Plan (OCP) advisory committee, according to a district news release.
District staff and council are in phase three of a four-phase OCP review. The revised plan will be the overarching document that determines the future direction for policies in the district and is based on community input.

Investigation continuing
North Vancouver RCMP continue to investigate the close to $1.5 million missing from Squamish Nation coffers, according to Cap. Richard De Jong of the RCMP.
“The investigation is still ongoing, with statement taking and reviewing of financial document,” De Jong told The Squamish Chief.
In 2014 the Squamish Nation’s Chiefs and council stripped two members, Krisandra Jacobs and Glen Newman, of their authority after close to $1.5 million from the Nation’s “emergency fund” wasn’t properly accounted for.
As to why it has taken so long to investigate, De Jong said “police files of this nature usually require a lengthy forensic investigation.” No charges have been laid.
Rate review deadline
Many rural residents, including some in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, do not have access to natural gas as a utility.
Instead, they have to rely on electricity, which can mean extra expenses.
In response, the BC Utilities Commission and FortisBC are working on a report to review the formula. As part of this process, they are taking input from the SLRD as well as residents.
The comment period was to have ended in August but has been extended to Sept. 2. For more information, see the www.bcuc.com under RIB Rate Review in Current Proceedings.
