Pets galore
The Squamish Valley Branch of the SPCA had a busy year.
A whopping 299 animals were adopted from the shelter in 2016, according to a news release from the organization. Thirty-seven cats and kittens were adopted in December alone. Never have so many pets been adopted as over this past year, the release states.
Farmers’ market takes a break
Though it has been a constant since 2006, the winter Squamish Farmers’ Market is taking a bit of a hiatus this winter from its bi-weekly markets. Winter vendors have been dwindling of late, so the board of directors has decided to end the markets from January to March this year. While the market is closed, the board of directors will be working hard behind the scenes to bring a revived market back at the corner of Cleveland and Victoria avenues on the first Saturday in April until the last Saturday in October.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji
Members of the Squamish Sikh Temple invite all Squamish residents out to their temple on Fifth Avenue for the celebration of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Sikh Guru. The festivities get underway at 6 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6 and run until Sunday, Jan. 8. There will be plenty of food, visiting and prayers. Gobind Singh lived from 1666 to 1708, and according to Sikh history was a spiritual master poet and philosopher. He became a Sikh leader when he was nine years old after his father, the ninth guru, was beheaded for refusing to convert to Islam, the story goes. Singh also started the tradition of Sikhs wearing the five “ks,” which are items of religious significance: uncut hair, a wooden comb, an iron bangle, a drawstring undergarment and a symbolic dagger.
