Squamish police briefs

Serious highway pileup. Drinking and driving. Responsible drivers. Truck stolen. Landlord and tenant issues.

Serious highway pileup

In a near-miracle, no one was killed in a four-car collision involving nine people and two dogs, though one person did sustain severe injuries.

Police say the incident occurred on Highway 99 near Daisy Lake on Dec. 9.

Officers say a northbound car crossed the centreline and collided with a second car that was travelling southbound, then two additional cars also became involved.

First responders extracted people who were trapped in two of the cars. Two dogs from the second car were also in the crash and were not injured.

Officers say the driver of the second car sustained extensive injuries and was airlifted to the hospital. The remaining people were given medical care at local hospitals or clinics.

Three of the four cars were totalled. While the police follow-up continues, impairment is not part of the investigation.

Drinking and driving

An officer stopped a car that appeared to be going fast.

The driver admitted to drinking before driving and failed roadside test.

Police issued a 90-day ban on driving and impound the car for 30 days.

Responsible drivers

Officers checked 91 drivers at roadside screening tests on Dec. 18.

None were impaired.

The Impaired Driving Campaign continues, and overall, police commend drivers who are making safe driving decisions.

Truck stolen

Police are blaming thieves for the disappearance of a white Ford F350 truck from the 40100-block Government Road.

The incident occurred sometime from Dec. 18 to 19, between 7 p.m. and 7:50 a.m.

Officers say the burglars also went into a second car, stole a wallet with bank cards, and used them for fraudulent transactions around town before the cards were cancelled.

Landlord and tenant issues

Squamish RCMP have recently been receiving a number of calls from landlords and tenants having disputes.

Police say these types of disputes fall within the Residential Tenancy Act and are not matters police become involved with.

For more information on residential tenancies, go to the British Columbia website for housing and tenancy information, the site will help determine if police need to become engaged.
