Here is a rundown of some of the RCMP files in Squamish from Jan.12 to 18.
Arrests over weapons/drugs
A driver and passenger were arrested on Jan. 12 after a Squamish RCMP officer checked on a driver of a vehicle who appeared to be impaired.
Police say the officer then spotted a prohibited weapon at the feet of the passenger. Officers arrested both the driver and passenger for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Other officers assisted in the investigation. Members also searched the individuals and the vehicle and found drugs on the suspects and in the vehicle and two machetes within arm’s reach of where the driver was sitting. The vehicle was towed.
Speeding ticket
A driver received a speeding ticket and had their van towed and impounded for seven days under the Motor Vehicle Act on Jan. 13.
RCMP say BC Highway Patrol Squamish had been conducting traffic enforcement in the south end of Highway 99 when a van travelling 109 km/hr in a 60km/hr zone did not immediately stop for the officer, instead continuing to drive through traffic. Eventually, the driver stopped for officers.
Police also note that on Jan. 17, BC Highway Patrol issued tickets and impounded vehicles when drivers were clocked travelling 150 km/ hr and 151 km/hr in an 80 km/ hr zone.
RCMP reminds drivers that the Sea to Sky Highway is a mountain highway, and during winter the weather, temperature, and road conditions can change drastically at a moment's notice. "Maintaining the posted speed limit will reduce accidents and possible road closures due to the accidents. It will also allow everyone driving this beautiful scenic highway to get to their destination," Squamish RCMP said.
