On Monday Oct., 20, Squamish RCMP received a report of a possible prohibited driver on Hwy. 99 near town. The vehicle was located in the oncoming lane at Commercial Way, but the driver took evasive action when spotted by police. Police immediately located the vehicle parked in the 39000 block of Discovery Way and arrested the driver. During a search incidental to the arrest, drugs and equipment related to drug trafficking were discovered in the vehicle. The driver is facing prohibited driving and possible drug charges. The investigation continues.
Vehicle Theft
On the same day, Oct. 20, police received a report about a 2012 Audi SUV being stolen from a driveway on Oceanview Rd. in Lions Bay. The vehicle was located in Surrey the next day in the immediate vicinity of three other high-end stolen vehicles. A suspect was arrested at the scene and later released. The investigation is on-going in Surrey detachment.
Weather tools stolen
On Wednesday, Oct. 23, a theft of scientific instruments valued at approximately $5,000 was reported to Squamish RCMP. The equipment had been stolen from a weather station located near Britannia Beach sometime during the past three months.
Drunk Driving suspected
On Saturday, Oct. 25, police received a report of a possible prohibited driver on Hwy 99 near Alice Lake. The vehicle was reportedly crossing the centre line repeatedly and forcing on-coming vehicles onto the shoulder. The vehicle came to a stop at Depot Rd. and did not proceed when the light turned green. Police attended and found the female driver to be disoriented and displayed symptoms of impairment by alcohol and drugs. Roadside test and field sobriety testing were conducted. The drug test demand was refused. Charges of Impaired driving, Refusal and Dangerous Operation are being recommended.
Check turns up drugs
On Sunday, Oct. 26, while police conducted a road safety check stop on Industrial Way officers attempted to stop a new driver not displaying the “N” sign. The driver took evasive action. Police located the vehicle still mobile in the immediate vicinity and stopped it. Evidence of drug possession was immediately apparent and the driver was arrested. Drugs were seized and charges for drug possession will be considered.

Rain blamed for crashes
Heavy rain and stormy conditions are believed to be contributing factors in several collisions which occurred on Hwy. 99 over the past few weeks. Drivers are reminded to reduce speed and exercise caution while driving at this time of year, particularly during hours of darkness.
Pedestrian safety alert
This week the District of Squamish is launching its annual Be Bright at Night campaign in conjunction with ICBC and the RCMP.
Pedestrians and cyclist are urged to wear bright coloured clothing and clothing with reflective strips. Reflectors donated by ICBC that can be attached to clothing or backpacks increase your visibility significantly. These are being distributed at Brennan Park Recreation Centre, the RCMP Community Policing Office, Squamish Public Library, municipal hall and the Squamish Seniors’ Centre.
