Squamish Rebuild celebrates grand re-opening

Group has helped lessen impact on local landfill

There was cake, barbecue, refreshments and sales abound at the Squamish Rebuild grand re-opening on Saturday (Oct. 29).

The non-profit group attracted several old and new customers to the event, which lasted from noon to 4 p.m.

Squamish CAN's Ana Santos, who attended the event said it was a nice way for the group to get some recognition for all the hard work they've done in recent months.

"So-called waste from construction, demolition and renovation operations occupies an incredible amount of space in our landfill," she said. "Services like those offered by Squamish Rebuild are priceless. Not only do they help divert, not waste, valuable resources from the landfill, but they also become excellent tools for community education in this sense."

Santos said Squamish Rebuild is helping locals think of other ways to dispose of waste, as opposed to using the landfill, which is filling up at an alarming pace.

"The fact is that it costs our community a lot of money to constantly maintain and expand the landfill," she said. "And it simply doesn't make sense to simply continue to pour our tax dollars into this hole in the ground for the foreseeable future."

According to the Squamish Rebuild website, the group has diverted 15.9 metric tons of re-usable building materials from the landfill since July 6.

The group's headquarters, which is located on 40350A Government Road, is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
