The quarterly financial report for the Sea to Sky School District is in, showing a deficit of almost $162,000, though this is offset by a surplus from the prior school year.
The numbers were tallied as of March 31 and were included in the agenda of the school board’s financial committee meeting last week.
Total revenue for the school district was about $38.8 million.
Aside from the operating grant, which totals to more than $32.2 million, the next biggest source of income appears to be international student tuition fees, which tally up to more than $2 million.
Trailing closely behind is money from special purpose fund grants, which amount to about $1.9 million.
Included in those grants is cash given for a variety of learning programs.
As for expenses, the total comes up to about $39 million.
Salaries and wages account for the biggest expense, about $29.6 million.
Costs for supplies and services are the next biggest cost, at about $7.1 million. This accounts for operating costs that aren’t associated with wages and benefits. Included are utilities, buses, and facilities operations, among others.
Amortization of fixed assets is the third highest price tag, reaching about $1.9 million. This term refers to depreciation expenses on items such as buildings and machinery.
However, the Ministry of Education provides about $1.6 million to help curb depreciation costs.
All in all, when a surplus from the previous year is accounted for, this year’s deficit gets covered, with about $252,000 extra left over.
The numbers are for schools not just in Squamish, but for the Whistler and Pemberton areas as well.
