Contributed to The Chief

This past weekend our 1st Squamish Scouts travelled to Victoria for the third annual Klondike Derby and placed first in a field of 22 teams from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

The derby, which was held at Royal Roads University, was a one-day challenge over a 6-km course where the Scouts collected a total of 337 points out of a possible 350 to take first place.

Traveling over the course the troop was presented with ten different challenges such as first aid, camp craft, map and compass and leadership. They were awarded points for teamwork, enthusiasm, overall skills and time taken to complete the tasks.

The troop's leaders were very pleased with the ways the boys worked together as a team and they leadership skills they demonstrated throughout the day.

The boys can not only be proud of their accomplishment as individuals and as a team but how they represented their local Scout group and the community of Squamish.

Our Scouts set a new standard for this derby with the highest point total ever awarded in the three years it has been running.

They will be returning next year to defend their title and we think the others will be out to catch them, as the Victoria group was not to happy to see the trophy go to a "bunch of mainlanders".
