Squamish to host TEDWomen

Event to feature local speaker and stream live event from U.S.

TEDx is giving Squamish women something to talk about.

On Thursday, Dec. 5, the community will hold its inaugural TEDxSquamish Women event. TEDWomen, being hosted in San Francisco, will be streamed live at the Squamish Adventure Centre and three additional Squamish speakers will talk at the local happening.

Inspiring and engaging women to create stronger, healthier and more sustainable communities through thought-provoking events like TEDxSquamish Women are important steps to creating a paradigm shift in the local economy and social development, event leader Megan Reynolds said in a statement.

"Building on the legacy of TEDWomen and the recent success of TEDxSquamish, we are thrilled to bring this event to the women of the Sea to Sky Corridor and empower them with ideas that can change their lives," Reynolds said.

The initiative got its start in 2010, examining how women and girls are reshaping the future. Today it has spread worldwide and covers topics from poverty solutions to expressions or art.

On Nov. 2, Squamish hosted its first TEDx event at Quest University. The event featured 10 speakers, with talks centering around the theme of "Radical Shift."

The names of the local speakers will be released soon. Tickets to TEDxSquamishWomen are $20. They can be bought at www.tedxsquamishwomen.evenbrite.ca or in person at the Howe Sound Women's Centre located at 38021 Third Ave.
