Squamish weather: Unseasonal warm weather to stick around

Highs of 29 C and 28 C with temperatures lowering on Sunday and Monday.

The last few days of warm weather are set to continue.

Squamish meteorologist Jason Ross reports that the weekends warm weather will continue through into this week, though there may be some showers at the tail end.

"A ridge of high pressure will build in from the Pacific today (May 13) remaining in place through the remainder of the week with temperatures  5-8 degrees above seasonal averages," he said in an email to the Squamish Chief, adding that we could be in for some rain later on.

"An upper trough may develop later in the week with a chance of showers.

As reported by Environment Canada, the temperature will average out this week – starting at a high of 20 C today (Monday), before climbing to 23 C and 24 C on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, and heading back down to 19 C by Thursday.

Similarly to Ross, Environment Canada expects there to be rain later in the week on Thursday, but they also forecast a 30 % chance of rain today.

Increasing cloudiness today will give way to sunny weather on Wednesday before the rain arrives.

Motorcycles on the roads

May means more motorcycles on the Sea to Sky Highway.

May is also provincially declared Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

According to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, six out of 10 crashes involving a motorcycle in B.C. happen at an intersection.

"Police report that driver distraction, failing to yield the right of way, and improper turning are the top factors for vehicles that collide with motorcycles," reads the ICBC site.

The Crown corporation provides the following tips for drivers:

  • Scan intersections carefully and take an extra moment to look for motorcycles when turning left.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions that take your mind off driving or your eyes off the road.
  • Allow at least three or four seconds of following distance behind a motorcycle and plenty of lane space when you pass.
  • Be ready to yield, as a motorcycle is often closer than it seems. Remember, it can be hard to tell how fast they're travelling.

Find more tips on safe motorcycle riding on ICBC's website.
