Despite the recent snowfall, the District of Squamish says that the winter parking restrictions installed for winter snow plowing around town will not be extended past March 1.

This winter season, the District put in no parking signs effective from Dec. 1 through March 1 to make snow plowing easier, as some streets were unable to be effectively plowed in the 2021 to 2022 winter season, according to the District’s website.

The District chose 18 areas to install these parking restrictions throughout various neighbourhoods in Squamish.

“Initial feedback from our public works team highlights the winter parking signs proved to be extremely helpful for our equipment operators and the overall effectiveness of our snow clearing efforts this season,” reads an email from District spokesperson, Rachel Boguski, sent to The Squamish Chief on Feb. 28.

However, much like the rest of the Sea to Sky Corridor and Lower Mainland, Squamish has recently been hit with a barrage of snow as we near the March 1 expiration date. Somewhat ironically, Environment Canada is predicting about five centimetres of snow for Squamish on Wednesday night, March 1.

The District wrote that they plan on discussing the timeline of these parking restrictions and more streets that may need restrictions.

“This policy will be reviewed for its effectiveness prior to next snow season, the time span of the restrictions will be part of that conversation,” wrote Boguski.

“Public works staff have identified several additional streets as having potential for future winter parking restrictions which will also be discussed during the review, as will the feedback from the community around the experience of the restrictions and their impacts on snow removal.”
