Squamish youth to rule city hall

Mayor for a Day contest underway

Squamish kids are taking over city hall on Tuesday, May 22.

As a part of Local Government Awareness Week from May 15 to 21, the District of Squamish is running a Mayor for a Day competition in elementary schools. Students in Grades 5, 6 and 7 are being asked to write a letter to the municipality on why they should sit in the district's top seat. The winning applicant will receive a private tour of town hall, have lunch with mayor and council, co-chair the day's Committee of the Whole meeting and be interviewed by local media.

On the same day, four Howe Sound Secondary School students are slated to shadow councillors. The pupils will be handed the District of Squamish Parks and Recreation Master Plan to review before the afternoon meeting, at which time they can ask questions regarding the plan.

"This is all about enhancing residents, of all ages, knowledge of local government," the district's spokesperson Christie Smith said, noting the district is presenting educational workshops at Squamish's six District 48 elementary schools. "Residents play an important role in shaping their community."

Grownups aren't out of the loop. Squamish residents will have a chance to enter a local government trivia contest. The victor will receive 10 pool passes to Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

On Wednesday, May 23, the public works yard is opening up to school tours as a part of Public Works Day. Students from the six elementary schools will take a look at the district's horticulture programs, water and sewage systems and the district's transportation fleet. Students are encouraged to bring goods for the food bank. The public is invited to view the facilities from 1 to 3 p.m.
