On the eve of International Women’s Day, the YWCA Metro Vancouver announced the 62 women nominated for their annual award.
The YWCA Women of Distinction Awards have been honouring women since 1984 for the work they’ve done to better the well-being and future of their community.
Dr. Sonia Butterworth, who spent much of her childhood in Squamish, is up for an award for her work in medical education. She’s the assistant dean of the postgraduate medical education department at UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, and is the director for surgical trainees. Butterworth is also known across Canada for championing the sharing of innovative best practices with universities. At the BC Children’s Hospital, Butterworth serves as an investigator with a focus on paediatric trauma, injury prevention, and childhood cancer. She also supervises students and residents.
Between March 7 and April 19, all nominees are eligible for the Connecting with the Community Award. The public can vote online for the candidate they choose, and Scotiabank will donate $10,000 to the YWCA program of the winner’s choice. To vote, go to ywcavan.org/programs/women-distinction-awards/connecting-community-award.
The award recipients will be announced on May 13.
