Sri Lanka trip encourages travellers to make a difference

Community

The flood of compassion resulting from the flood caused by a tsunami in South Asia united survivors and those unaffected wishing to help. Now a local travel agent is traveling to Sri Lanka with her daughter to spend much needed tourist dollars, and she's encouraging others to come.

Stephanie Brown is on the board of the Squamish Humanity Village project, and also runs a local travel agency. Brown is inviting Squamish residents to The Northern Lights Gallery on Cleveland Avenue at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 8) to hear more about what she calls "a once in a lifetime opportunity."

"I am offering a custom tour to Sri Lanka with a reputable, independent tour operator who subscribes to responsible travel," said Brown. "I believe that actually going there, meeting the people, and yes, spending money is a very positive action for the oceanside community of Wanduruppa."

Brown said that sitting on the board of a project that links Squamish to a devastating town in Sri Lanka has been both inspiring and frustrating. But the experience has also increased her belief that "one person can make a difference and that many can make an even greater difference" so she hopes that she can convince six to 12 people to join her and her eight-year-old daughter.

Brown has even planned the trip for March Break to accommodate families wishing to travel together. Individuals interested in participating can attend the information evening or call her at 604 898-6659.
