Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, Jack Black shoot film in Squamish

Comedy trio play competing birdwatchers in 'Alaska'

Squamish will host three of the film industry's biggest stars next month as Squamish is once again transformed into Alaska for The Big Year, featuring Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black.

The District of Squamish has confirmed the municipality is in discussions with 20th Century Fox to pin down the exact dates and locations of the shoot, which is currently scheduled to happen over a few days in May.

Based on a 1998 book "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession," by Mark Obmascik, the film is about three men who try to outdo each other in a bird-watching competition to spot the rarest birds in North America.

Martin's launched into infamy with his work on Saturday Night Live. His resume includes a long list of blockbuster and cult classic films, including leading roles in The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Planes Trains and Automobiles, LA Story, Father of the Bride, Parenthood and Bowfinger, just to name a few.

His latest high profile appearance was as co-host of the 2010 Academy Awards alongside Alec Baldwin.Wilson teams up once again with his Marley & Me director for this latest project. His accomplishments also include Bottle Rocket, Shanghai Noon, The Royal Tenenbaums, Starsky & Hutch, The Wedding Crashers, I spy, You, Me and Dupree, and Night at the Museum.

And Black brings his zany antics to town after starring in a series of highly successful films, including Nacho Libre, Shallow Hal, Be Kind Rewind, Envy, King Kong, Tropic Thunder and Year One.

The project has already caused excitement in Tofino, with reports that filming will take place in, Schooner Restaurant, which was established in this seaside Vancouver Island community 43 years ago.According to a report from the Canadian Press, the film crew is expected to be in Tofino between May 15 and May 22.
