Still going strong

It has always seemed to me that one of the big distinctions between those who find retirement to their liking and those who don't is whether or not they have had, previous to retiring, interests outside their work responsibilities already in place.

It has always seemed to me that one of the big distinctions between those who find retirement to their liking and those who don't is whether or not they have had, previous to retiring, interests outside their work responsibilities already in place. Many say they will take up hobbies and activities after they retire, and it is true that new endeavors can be tried when time and energy become available, but it seems a greater satisfaction is derived, especially initially, from having more time to pursue some already familiar and enjoyed activities.

One poll I read about stated that only about 20 per cent of people have a "strong commitment to activities outside of work, one of the factors key to a satisfying retirement". If not yet retired, look ahead to the hours previously spent at work, possibly in the company of others, which will need to be filled in a gratifying way. Get used to doing something that can be expanded upon once there is more time. It does not take most people long to say, "I don't know how I had time to go to work".

Exercise is one thing that most retirees find they need to incorporate into a daily routine, in order to keep joints from stiffening and muscles from atrophying. Walking is a great all round activity good for the brain as well as the body. The groups mentioned in this column are always pleased when new participants show up to join them

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at 10 a.m. on Tuesday (Feb 14) at the Shoppers Drug Mart end of the Chieftain Centre parking lot for a walk along the Estuary Forest Loop. This group takes somewhat ambitious walks of about an hour and a half duration. Contact Ray at 604-89-4316 or Lesley at 604-898-1628.

The Tantalus Walking Club will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Feb 16) at the Fisherman's Entrance to the spit dyke, off Government Road south of the Railway Museum, for a flat walk along Woodpecker Trail. Some members of this group sometimes walk on Tuesdays as well but decide amongst themselves where and when. Contact Joyce at 604-898-5594.

Elaine, on behalf of the Canadian Legion, Branch 70, sponsored bus trips, at 604-898-5463, reports that the Granville Island trip has had to be cancelled. The Fraser Downs Sulky Races/Casino and Buffet Lunch trip is still a go for Saturday (March 18); c/o March 1. Once a certain quota is reached to make a trip viable, then the more people that sign up, the less the cost will be as the charges are divided among those traveling. Hmm, I'm thinking it might be a great way to celebrate St Patrick's Day, just one day after.

Burt Bacharach will be performing with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on the evening of Monday (March 8); c/o Feb 28.An opportunity to visit the ever popular Coquitlam Casino is available on Wednesday (March 22); c/o Mar 15.On Sunday (May 7) there is a trip to Stars on Ice (got grandkids?); c/o April 24.
