STILL GOING STRONG: Seniors talk centre

It is of the utmost importance that all Squamish seniors be aware that a new seniors' centre is about to become a reality. A great many people over a great many years have worked to bring the task to the point of space being allocated. The interior design now needs to be the best it can in order to most adequately meet the needs of those who will be using the facility over the next many years to come. Once built, changes will not be possible.

As announced, a troubleshooting meeting was held on Tuesday (May 2) at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre to help determine a list of realistic expectations that provide flexible, sensible and varied use of the building. It is hoped that younger as well as older retirees and seniors will find space and amenities in the new facility suitable to their activities and events.

Anyone with additional suggestions for inclusion should contact Ray at 604-898-4316 or Glenn at 604-898-5029 - and why not plan on attending the Select Committee on Seniors' Issues meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (May 9) in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Hall to show support for something that has been long awaited in Squamish.

Come be part of the solution ahead of time instead of one of the complainers after things can no longer be altered. A show of interest by the seniors would greatly help in securing a facility that reflects their expectations rather than something assumed adequate by external sources.

The Women on Wheels (WOW) will meet at 10 a.m. on Monday (May 8) at Canadian Tire for a ride on the golf course and other trails. Twenty three women turned up for their first ride, five of them new members and one who had been in town for only one week. Contact Shirley at 604-898-5715 or get additional information about the group from the web site at

The Select Committee on Seniors' Issues will meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (May 9) in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Hall. One of the issues on the agenda is the submission by the seniors of Squamish of the changes needing to be made to the architects drawings of the proposed Seniors' Centre to be incorporated into Solterra Developments' plans for the Eaglewind housing project on Block in downtown Squamish.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (May 9) at the end of Perth Drive in Garibaldi Highlands for a walk to Alice Lake using the Mashiter Trail and returning by Jack's Trail. Bring something to eat and drink during the stop at Alice Lake. Contact Lesley at 604-89801628 or Ray at 604-898-4316.

As Wednesday (May 10) has been declared BC's provincial Hospital Auxiliary Day, your local Squamish General Hospital's Auxiliary is taking advantage of the occasion by inviting you to help them celebrate with coffee and cookies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gelato Carina.

Photos of the medical equipment currently in use at the Squamish General Hospital purchased with the monies raised by this group will be displayed to show you just what happens to the funds raised at their two annual events: the Spring Garage Sale and the Christmas Bazaar. Additional funds are also raised through the Hospital Gift Shop, most of the items made year round by members of the auxiliary. They purchase only medical equipment for the hospital with monies raised as they feel the community as a whole benefits from this endeavor.

Come meet the people without whose help many of the very expensive and highly specialized items helping keep hospital patients in Squamish well cared for would not be in place. Contact Dorothy at 604-898-3040.

The Caregivers Support Group will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday (May 10) at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre. Contact Patricia at 604-892-2293.

The Tantalus Walking Club will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday (May 11) at the Dog Pound for a flat walk north along the dyke. Contact Joyce at 604-898-5594.

The Hilltop House Support Group will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (May 11) for their regular monthly meeting. This group will also be holding its annual garage sale on Saturday (June 3), still some time away, but you are asked to consider saving items for donation. All articles, except clothing (the Thrift Shop could make good use of those), will be gratefully received at Hilltop House between now and the sale. Contact Ruth at 604-898-3368 or Cindy at 604-892-6003.

Those in our community who look after the Special Olympic athletes are looking for a person or persons to head up their fundraising committee. They have many willing helpers to share the work involved but since losing Margaret Casey to the Sunshine Coast, they need a fundraising leader on a one or more project basis. They would even welcome some fundraising ideas they might be able to pursue.

Seniors, retired persons or anyone interested in working on behalf of special needs athletes, are asked to call Adele Fassler on her cell phone at 604-848-8500.
