A local family was thrilled and relieved last week when told their beloved dog Sam was on his way home.

The aging dog is once again safely cuddled up on his old bed thanks to an observant animal lover in Vancouver three months after being separated from his family.

"Fortunately for us a kind soul who takes the 'Adoptable dog of the Week' photos for the Vancouver Animal Shelter noticed one of our posters in a store in Kitsilano," said Sam's owner Laura Thompson. "If not for her, the whereabouts of our wonderful old dog would yet be haunting us."

Sam's ordeal began June 30 after Thompson took him for a walk on Nexen Beach. Thompson said he was out of sight for only a few minutes while tending to her second dog when Sam disappeared. Witness accounts stated he'd been taken away in a stranger's vehicle. They were reunited Friday (Sept. 21), two weeks after Sam was dropped off at the Vancouver shelter.

Thompson said she hopes Sam's happy ending brings hope to others who have lost a pet.

"Don't give up!" she said.
