The rightful owner of two kayaks that were reported as having been stolen a year ago has had the boats returned. Meanwhile, a local man was arrested in the matter and may face a charge of possession of stolen property.
On Tuesday (Aug. 6) at around 9:30 p.m., police received a report that the two missing kayaks had been spotted associated to [a] residence in the 38000 block of Westway Avenue, Squamish RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in an email. The kayaks had recently been advertised for sale on Craigslist, he said.
Police visited the home and detained a 34-year-old Squamish man described as well known to local police. The man claimed he had bought the boats last year on Craigslist, but was not overly co-operative with police, Pride said. Investigators are evaluating a possible charge of possession of stolen property.
Boat runs aground
On Saturday (Aug. 10) at around 8:30 a.m., police were notified that a 30-foot sailboat appeared to be beached just off Nexen Beach and was listing to the side. When officers arrived, the vessel was largely submerged, Pride said.
Police located the owner, a local resident, who said he had become disoriented the previous evening while trying to return the boat to the marina and beached his boat. A witness told The Chief that the local chapter of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue had helped the man off the boat on Friday (Aug. 9) and that he was attended to a few minutes later by an ambulance.
The man, however, was not injured in the incident and the owner told police he was making arrangements to move the boat. It has since been relocated. No environmental concerns were evident in this incident, Pride wrote.
Teens arrested
On Friday at around 11:30 p.m., police responded to a report of two males threatening a couple with a knife near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Victoria Street downtown. Attending officers located the two suspects, age 16 and 15, a short distance from where the incident occurred. The incident appears to have stemmed from an ongoing dispute between neighbours, Pride said. On this occasion a verbal altercation escalated, with one of the teens producing a knife. No one was injured.
Vehicles targeted
On Friday, police received a report that a vehicle had been broken into while parked at the Garibaldi Park parking lot. Stolen were an iPod, an iPad, luggage, clothing, jewelry and a small amount of cash. A driver's-side window had been smashed to gain entry.
Also on Friday, a vehicle was broken into while parked overnight at the Cat Lake parking lot. The front driver's-side window was smashed to gain entry, and stolen were an iPod and a wallet containing personal ID, bank and credit cards.
