Store staff's actions lauded

Squamish's bear-aware coordinator praised the actions of Save-On Foods staff after a shopping cart full of various types of meat was discovered behind the store.

The Save-On cart was found on Wednesday (June 22) in the bush behind the store, near a trail that residents use to access Squamish Elementary and Howe Sound Secondary schools, Bear Aware coordinator Meg Toom wrote in an email to The Chief.

The cart contained a full turkey, fish, sausages and other meat, Toom said. Despite the fact that none of the products were Save-On products, grocery-store staff came out, cleaned up the mess and disposed of the items in the store's compactor, Toom said.

"This is just one o the many bizarre things that happens in our community," Toom wrote. "It's good to point out the good that [this] happens in our community and perhaps this will shed some light on why we have bears hanging around our neighbourhoods."
